The Mindful Leader “Research Project”

Designed for the Ashridge Executive Education at Hult International Business School
(UK), this research summarizes the effects of a mindful leader training program. They found the training to benefit leaders in three areas:

  • Improved metacognitive capability (the ability to observe one’s thoughts, feelings and sensations in the moment) and the attitudes of allowing and curiosity.
  • Ability to create a ‘space’ that allowed leaders to respond – as opposed to react – to events.
  • Display of a broader range of cognitive and emotional skills such as focus, emotional regulation, empathy, adaptability and perspective taking.

Collectively, the application of these skills results in improvements in capacities for resilience, collaboration and leading in complexity. The report emphasizes that mindfulness is not a “quick win”. Sustained mindfulness practice of around ten minutes per day over eight weeks seems to be fundamental in achieving the desired results.
